she was old enough to take responsibility for her education and if she didn't want to apply herself in that area then she would have to carry that, not me.

“I will say that my daughter did not do as much science as I would have liked.... but I told her she was old enough to take responsibility for her education and if she didn't want to apply herself in that area then she would have to carry that, not me. Having said that, I know that if she ever needed to know any of that science stuff that she never learned, she would know where to find the answers. She LOVES learning and I have been so impressed with how much confidence she has and how willing and eager she is to learn new things still, even as a newly wed and out on her own.”  ---Jessica Vega

When you show character,
people begin to respect you...
After time, that respect grows into trust...
After time, that trust builds a relationship...
When you have relationships with people
you have influence into their lives...
Influence is leadership.

Self-directed education, then, begins with a purpose.

Sitting in a classroom desk year after year becomes very boring to most teens. Sure, you learn things that are important, but it doesn't seem real, it doesn't have a purpose right now.

Real learning comes when the people in your life need you, when they need what only you can provide. When your genius solves the problem, when your labor provides the food on the table, when your skill gives the people you care about a better life, that is real learning.

Self-directed education, then, begins with a purpose. You want to accomplish something of value, and so you reach for the knowledge and the skills you need. When you have accomplished your purpose, you know you have added value to your life and to the lives of those around you.

Something to think about as you all prepare your older teens

for life in the real world....

sometimes you have to respect disrespectful people

and

sometimes you have to follow the rules.
