No Guarantees!

LOVED this article from Barbara Frank.

Great (Homeschool) Expectations” - http://barbarafrankonline.com/blog.php/2012/01/04/great-homeschool-expectations/

So many times we think, “if we just do a, b and c our kids will turn out all right.”  And then we are shocked when they don’t and we wring our hands with worry and regret, wondering what we did wrong.  I am a realist and I know that how my kids turn out will have little to do with me and everything to do with the choices they make in life.  And that is why I appreciate this article that Barbara Frank has written.  I encourage you to read it.

respect

A friend on FB posted this today:

“...loves the word "Respect"... Have u ever looked it up? It means " to consider". We want children to respect us, maybe we should consider them! Besides consider is a gentler word:)...and I consider u;)!”

Respect is something that I have been pondering for a while.  You see I have been working on what I want my relationship with my kids to be in these teen years and well on into their adult years.  I have seen parenting that is very controlling where the young person can’t do anything without the parent’s knowledge and consent.  And I have seen parenting become nothing more than a friendship, a “let’s be best friends” type thing with no guidance and a complete free for all, and I don’t want that either.  So what I have come up with at the moment is a relationship of respect.  And so when my friend posted today about respect = to consider, I thought that was a pretty good definition.

So what is this respect relationship going to look like practically?  I am not quite sure yet.  Still ruminating on that one.

So that it will go well with you…

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to posses...This day...I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30:15-16. 19, 20
